"CALPE. GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, HERITAGE".

The Culture Council of Calpe Town Council has published the book "Calpe, Geography, History and Heritage" by Abel Soler, PhD in philology and history. It is the most complete book on these local subjects of those produced so far.

The book takes a look at Calpe´s  history over the last 2000 years, summarising and revising everything previously published on the municipality, introducing new contributions and documents, as well as the great transformations of contemporary Calpe and its heritage, from "Els Banys de la Reina" to the Bofill buildings.

According to the author, Abel Soler, the book is "an essential guide to get to know the municipality, it is structured around three parts: geography as a setting, the town and its the history and the characters of Calpe and a third part which is the heritage, ranging from the sites of La Pobla or "Banys de la Reina", to the Arab Castellet or Bofill's buildings. It is an informative document, a research work of many months that uses all the information elaborated so far and at the same time tries to fill gaps and brings interesting novelties".

Francisco Velasco Hernández, creator and owner of Ediciones Nova Spartaria, holds a PhD in Modern History from the University of Murcia, is Professor of History and lecturer at the U.N.E.D. associated centre in Cartagena.

ABSTRACT:

The naval wars of the 17th century had their own particular battlefield in the Hispanic southeast, starting with the repercussions of the failed expeditions against Algiers, the danger of the squadrons of Barbary ships, the 'cleaning' of the coastline by the galleys of the Catholic King or the last acts of corsair cruelty in Adra and Calpe.

But the so-called 'major war' was also present, with the French attempt to invade Cartagena in 1643 and the battle of Cape Gata. Even the English civil war was transferred here, with a duel to the death between the Royalist and Parliamentary squadrons. And as the Maghreb corsairs became a serious international problem, important English, Dutch and French squadrons also arrived in the ports of the southeast to fight them from nearby.

The epilogue to almost a century of warmongering at sea came with the terrible bombardment of Alicante in 1691. It is therefore not surprising that its waters were ploughed by the most famous admirals of the time, whether French (Sourdis, Brézé, Tourville, Duquesne, D'Estrées), English (Mansell, Rupert del Rin, Blake, Spragg, Rooke) or Dutch (Ruyter, Tromp), without forgetting the generations of illustrious Spanish and Italian sailors.

DIVINA ANCESTRA by MARTA BLANCO FERNANDEZ

For millennia, in the West, divinity has been conceptualised as masculine, with female images being marginalised from the conception of the sacred. Recovering the narrative of the divine in a feminine key, searching for new structures that sustain human spirituality by rescuing ancient goddesses, is part of the work of Theology, which also offers the possibility of conceiving divinity as a profound expression of the self in communion with Nature.

MATÈRIA DE VALÈNCIA. SURPRISING FACTS AND CHARACTERS FROM OUR HISTORY.

Did you know that Adolf Hitler had Valencian slaves during the Second World War? Or that a woman from Alzira, Ginesa, was the lover of King James I and that they fathered an illegitimate child? Or that the Falles de València were held in the city of Tarragona in the 1930s? And why does a rat penat represent us, the Valencians? Who was the invincible pilot and pardoner, Xiquet de Simat, who had a life like a film? Or what punishment did Franco's regime apply to the women who were repressed in the post-war period?

All these facts and characters, who in their own way have forged the country of the Valencians, can be found in Matèria de València, from the suggestive view of the well-known researcher and disseminator Vicent Baydal, together with many other surprising stories.

For example, that of the Castilian from Toledo who wrote the Curial e Güelfa, one of the peaks of Valencian medieval literature; that of the besnet of Pope Borja, governor of Orà, who was the first to be persecuted for homosexuality by the Inquisition; that of two Alacantins who were fundamental in the independence of the United States of America; that of Blasco Ibáñez as a disenchanted populist revolutionary or that of the strong women of our literature, such as Maria Beneyto and Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas. A delirious journey through the historical material of which we are made.
